These notes accompany the sermon found here.

Introduction:

Today’s Texts:  Isaiah 1:5-2:4, 6:1-7, 52:13-53:12.

Sermon Series:  Let Us Reason Together.

Today’s Point:  The atonement provided by Jesus Christ is the centerpiece in God’s plan to redeem Israel and all the nations.

The Tension:  Sin and Salvation

The tension seen by example in Isaiah 1:2-2:5.

The Resolve:  The Servant’s Sacrifice

  • A glimpse of the solution: Isaiah 6:1-7.  Heavenly Atonement.
    • Jesus died for our sins.
    • 52:15, “So he shall sprinkle many nations.”
    • 53:5, “Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.”
    • 53:10, “His soul makes an offering for guilt.”
    • 53:11, “By his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous.”
    • 53:12, “He shall divide the spoil with the strong.”
    • 53:12, “[He] makes intercession for the transgressors.”
  • Some New Testament interpretations:
    • Colossians 1:19-20, gives believers peace and reconciliation with God.
    • Colossians 2:13-14, moves believers from death to life, forgives their sins, and cancels the sin debt.
    • Colossians 2:15, disarms the spiritual powers of darkness.
    • Ephesians 2:14-16, bring together in peace and reconciliation a diverse people from both Jews and Gentiles.

The Implications:  What This Means to Us.

  • His salvation is a free gift to all who believe. Romans 10:9.
  • The foundation of our salvation is the sacrifice of the perfect Servant, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-10.
  • The Servant’s sacrifice is the beginning of our service to God. Isaiah 53:11; 2 Corinthians 5:15.
