These notes accompany the sermon found here.
Introduction
- Today’s Point: We can trust and obey Jesus Christ because he is perfectly obedient and persevering with the help of God.
- The Five “Servant Songs” of Isaiah: Isaiah 42:1–9; 49:1–7; 50:4–9; 52:13–53:12; 61:1–3. [Webb, Barry. The Message of Isaiah: On Eagles’ Wings. Edited by J. A. Motyer and Derek Tidball, Inter-Varsity Press, 1996.]
- How Isaiah 50:4-9 is possibly mentioned in the New Testament: Verse 6 – Matthew 26:67, 27:30. Verse 8 – Romans 8:33.
The Tongue and the Ear
- The person most qualified to speak and most worthy to be heard is the one who most intently listens to God.
- The Tongue – See John 12:49, 14:10, John 17:8; Luke 2:46-47, 4:22, 21:15; Colossians 2:3; 1 Corinthians 1:24.
- New Nave’s Topical Bible (Obedience Of Jesus Christ): 40:8; Isa. 11:5; Isa. 42:21; Isa. 50:5, 6; Matt. 3:15; Matt. 26:39, 42 Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42. Luke 2:49; John 4:34; John 5:30, 36; John 6:38; John 7:18; John 8:29, 46, 55; John 9:4; John 14:31; John 15:10; John 17:4; John 19:30; Phil. 2:8; Heb. 5:8; Heb. 10:7–9
The Back and the Cheeks
- To truly understand the suffering of the Christ, we must consider the divine attitudes toward sin and justice.
- See Matthew 26:67, 27:30. Hebrews 5:8; Acts 3:18; Isaiah 53, 45:1, 61:1; I Corinthians 2:8; Matthew 2:16-18; 1 Peter 4.
- No single text of scripture connects “Messiah” to suffering. So to see the necessity of the sufferings of the Messiah, we must step back from the text and look at the big picture that all the various titles, descriptions, names, and typologies form for us.
The Face Like Flint
- See Isaiah 50:7; Luke 9:51.
- The Lord God’s Help
Encouragements
- Will you trust and obey? Isaiah 50:10-11.
- We’re following the perfect servant and being conformed to his image.
