The True and Living Way; John 14:1-11.
Today’s Point: The person and work of Jesus Christ is the only way to truly know God and enjoy eternal life.
The Way
- A possible translation of John 14:6, “I am the true and living way. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
- Regarding John the Baptist, Matthew 3:3, 11:10; Mark 1:2-3; Luke 1:76-79, 3:4, 7:27; John 1:23 citing Isaiah 40:3. See also Malachi 3:1.
- In the context, Jesus claiming to be the way means that he is the way to the Father and by implication to eternal life. See Matthew 7:13-14; John 10:9; Isaiah 35:8-9; 1 John 5:12, 2:23; 2 John 9.
- The early church was even known as “The Way,” Acts 9:2, 19:9, 19:23, 24:14, 24:22.
The Truth
- See John 14:6, 18:33-38, 1:14, 1:17; 1 Corinthians 2:8; Matthew 5:17-18; Luke 24:44.
- “If God’s words determine reality, then of all the things a pastor does, speaking the words of God to the congregation is the most important.” ― Carl R. Trueman, Luther on the Christian Life: Cross and Freedom
The Life
- The way is not just a direction, an instruction, a formula, or method; He is a person that will abide with you by His Spirit and help you navigate life. See John 14-16.
- Now meditate upon the truth of these three words joined together in this verse, “Jesus is the true and living way,” John 14:6.
Encouragements
- Proverbs 16:25 “25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
- Tune in next time to learn how to abide in the Lord Jesus Christ so you can glorify God and flourish in this world.
