Introduction:
- Today’s Texts: John 1:35-42; John 7:25-44.
- Jesus as the Christ was a focus of the early church ministry to the Jews – Acts 5:42, 8:5, 9:22, 17:3, 18:5, 18:28, 26:23.
What did people expect?
- Christ, (Greek Χριστός, Christos; Hebrew מָשִׁיחַ, Mashiyach.): An anointed person, often a priest or a king, set apart for a special task.
- Old Testament key references: Psalm 2, 18:50, 20:6, 45:7, 89:20; Daniel 9:24-26; Isaiah 45:1, 61:1; 1 Samuel 16:13.
- A king from the line of David: See 1 Samuel 16:13; 2 Samuel 7:1-17; Isaiah 11; John 18:36-37; Genesis 49:9; Numbers 24:17-19; Revelation 5:5, 22:16.
- A conqueror: See Acts 4:25-27; Psalm 2; Isaiah 11.
- A deliverer: See Luke 4:18; Isaiah 61:1.
What did people not expect?
- That he would suffer and die: See 1 Corinthians 2:8; Isaiah 53; Psalm 22; Daniel 9:26; Luke 24:26; Acts 3:18, 17:3, 26:23; John 3:14-15, 12:34.
- That he would save people from their sins: See Jeremiah 31:33, 33:8; Ezekiel 37:23; Zechariah 13:1.
- That he would save by grace through faith: Eternal life comes by believing (by faith) in J Christ. John 1:14-17, 1:29, 3:16-18, 5:24, 15:3, 20:31; Ephesians 2:1-10.
Challenges:

- Do you fully know what it means to be “in Christ”?
