Introduction

  • Today’s Passage: Philippians 4:14-20.
  • Benediction – “A statement of blessing or good wishes given at or near the end of a letter.”* Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

The Glory of God

Glory as an attribute of God:  As an attribute of God, this refers to God’s wonderful beauty and magnificence.  “The singular splendor of God and its consequences for mankind.” (Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible)  See Romans 3:23; Ephesians 1:3-23; Psalm 24, 29, 57:5, 66, 108:5, 79:9; Isaiah 42:8, 48:11;  Romans 4:20;

Glory as the presence of God:  See Exodus 13:21-22, 24:16-18, 33:18-23, 34:29—35; 2 Corinthians 3:7-18; 1 Samuel 4:21-22; 2 Chronicles 5-7; Psalm 26:8, 63:2, 85:9; Ezekiel 10:4, 18-19, 11:12, 12:1-15, 43:2-9.

The glory of Jesus Christ:  See John 1:14, 17:1-10; Isaiah 4:2-6, 11:10, 40:2-5; Hebrews 1:3; Matthew 17:1-8; 2 Peter 1:16-17; Philippians 2:5-11; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Corinthians 15:39-43; Daniel 7:14; Hebrews 2:6-10; Revelation 5:12, 21.

God’s Glory and God’s People

God’s people experience God’s glory:  See John 1:14, 16:7-14; Matthew 18:20;  Romans 8:18, 21, 30; Philippians 3:21; Colossians 1:27; Jude 24-25; Colossians 3:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:14; 2 Timothy 2:10; 1 Peter 5:1, 10.

God’s people glorify God:  See Romans 15:6; 1 Corinthians 6:20, 10:31; Matthew 5:16, 48; Romans 5:1-3; 2 Corinthians 3:7-18, 12:9; Ephesians 1:12, 14, 17, 5:27; Colossians 1:11; Isaiah 43:5-7.

From the Westminster shorter catechism: 

Question:  What is the chief end of man?

Answer:  Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever.
