These notes accompany the sermon found here.

Today’s Point:  By referring to himself as “The Son of Man,” Jesus draws on the rich imagery of Daniel 7 to describe his identity, his authority, and his mission.

Equal with the Father?

  • In Authority, John 5:18.
  • In Work, John 5:17, 19, 20.
  • In Life, John 5:21, 24, 25, 26, 28-29.
  • In Judgment, John 5:22, 24, 27, 29.
  • In Honor, John 5:23.

The Son of Man

  • Salvation
    • The Son of Man brings salvation from the enemies of the people of God. Daniel 7:11-14, 21-22, 27.
    • See Luke 19:10; John 3:13-14, 6:27, 6:53, 9:35.
  • Suffering and Vindication
    • Jesus connects the salvation he provides and his eventual victory to the suffering he faces.
    • Mark 8:31, 10:45; John 3:13-14, 8:28, 12:23, 12:31, 13:31.
  • Exaltation
    • The Son of Man is then exalted above all things on the earth AND heaven. Daniel 7:14, 27.
    • Acts 7:56; Revelation 1:13, 14:14; John 1:51, 5:27, 6:62, 12:23, 13:31;
    • Coming on the clouds of heaven: See Daniel 7:13; Isaiah 14:14, 19:1; Nahum 1:3; Ezekiel 10:3-4; Psalm 18:10-12, 97:2, 104:3; Exodus 34:5, 40:34-35; Deuteronomy 31:15; 1 Kings 8:10-11; Matt. 24:30, 26:64; Mark 13:26, 14:62; Acts 1:9-11; Rev. 1:7; 14:14.

Encouragements
