The Servant’s Call

The notes accompany the sermon found here.

Today’s Point:  God planned from the beginning to send Jesus to fulfill the mission of Israel by bringing blessings to the whole world.‌

God planned from the beginning…

  • Isaiah 49:1-7 mentioned in the New Testament: Verse 2: Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12; Revelation 1:16, 2:12, 2:16, 19:15.  Verse 6:  Acts 13:47, 26:23; Luke 2:32; John 8:12, 9:5.
  • The Preexistence of Jesus: John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16-17; Revelation 3:14.
  • “In the shadow of his hand he hid me,” Isaiah 49:2.
  • Jesus is often the fulfillment of the hand or arm of the Lord. The word “shadow” here can speak of a typology or a symbol.   See Isaiah 49:2, 33:2, 40:10, 48:13, 49:22, 50:2, 51:4, 51:16, 52:10, 53:1, 59:16, 62:8, 63:5.
  • “He made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away.” Isaiah 49:2.  God’s Secret Weapon.

To send Jesus to fulfill the mission of Israel…

  • God called Israel, and Jesus, and the Church, with the mission to redeem all the nations. It’s a single mission since the garden.  See Genesis 12:3, 18:18, 26:4, 28:14; Psalm 72:17; Zechariah 8:23; Isaiah 2:2, 42:6, 45:22, 49:6, 56:7, 66:18-19; Acts 13:47, 26:18.
  • Major Bible studying hint: At times, Jesus and/or the Church (his body) may be called Israel because of this continuing mission.

By bringing blessings to the whole world.

  • Jesus brings salvation to the world by His Word. See Isaiah 49:2, 55:11; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25; John 12:48; Romans 10:5-17.

Encouragements

  • There is no other way of salvation: Isaiah 49:7, “Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves.”
  • Jesus Christ will not fail. See Philippians 2:9-11.  ‌
