John 17:6-19

These notes accompany the sermon, “Praying for Keeps” found at: https://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?m=t&s=627202135544874

Big Idea:  We should pray for the Father to keep us in Jesus Christ so that we will not fall away.

Keep us from what?

  • The world and it’s difficulties?  NO. John 17:15, 15:18-20, 16:33; Matthew 10:28.
  • The Evil One?  YES.  John 17:15, 14:30, 12:31, 16:11; Revelation 20:7-10.
  • Falling away?  YES.  John 17:12, 18:8-9.  On Judas:  John 6:60-71, 13:11-18.

How are we kept?

  • The Word of God.  John 17:6-8, 16:1, 17:17; Hebrews 2:1–4, 3:7–4:13, 5:11–6:12, 10:19–39, 12:1–29; 2 Timothy 3:16.
  • The fellowship of believers.  John 17:20-26; Matthew 18:15-20; Luke 17:3; James 5:19-20; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12;

In what is our security?

  • The gift of the Father.  John 17:6, 17:9, 17:24, 6:37-39, 10:28-29, 18:9; Hebrews 2:13.
  • The request of the Son.  John 17:11, 11:42; Romans 8:34-35; Hebrews 4:14-16.
  • The gift of the Son.  John 17:2-3, 10:28.
  • The glory of God.  John 17:10; Exodus 32:7-14; Philippians 1:6.
  • The name of God.  John 17:11-12, 17:6; 1 John 2:19; Matthew 7:21-24.

Invitation:

  • Pray for keeps – pray for the Father to keep you in Jesus Christ so that you will not fall away.
  • Pray the same for other members of your congregation.
  • Pray to stay diligent in the Word of God and in the fellowship of believers.
